The Dream of Brera and Mafai’s Imagination

A Story of Friendship
The Friends of Brera association was founded in Milan in 1926, the same year Aldo Bassetti was born in Gallarate. Ninety-five years later, in the spring of 2021, Bassetti donated the Mafai Collection to the Pinacoteca di Brera. The Dream of Brera and Mafai’s Imagination. A Story of Friendship retraces the link between two lives that were played out in parallel, albeit largely unwittingly, before finally meeting and forging an extremely solid and important bond. The lives of Brera and of Aldo Bassetti, against the backdrop of Fascism in Italy, embody the strength and courage required to fight barbarity and to recognise the value of art and culture as a political gesture.
