Gianni de Rosa gained a diploma with honours in viola under Angelo Bartoletti at the Conservatorio di Musica “G. Verdi” in Milan, where he also pursued the study of composition with Ivan Fedele, before going on to perfect his studies under Armando Burattin, Danilo Rossi and Wolfram Christ.

He held the post of first viola in the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano “G. Verdi” from 1994 to 1999 under the guiding hand of such internationally renowned conductors and soloists as Riccardo Muti, George Prêtre, Carlo Maria Giulini, Riccardo Chailly, Gianandrea Noseda, Tibor Varga and Enrico Dindo. He has also worked with the “Mahler Chamber Orchestra” and, more recently, with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI. He currently performs in chamber orchestras with a repertoire ranging from the Classical era to 20th century, Avant-garde and contemporary music.

He continues to work with “Le Concert des Nations” conducted by Jordi Savall. Since his debut in 1991, he has toured with the ensemble in Europe, the United States, South America and Asia, including as principal player and soloist.

He has also performed as first viola with the “Accademia Bizantina” conducted by Ottavio Dantone; the “Ensemble Zefiro” conducted by Alfredo Bernardini; “I Barocchisti” conducted by Diego Fasolis, “La Risonanza” conducted by Fabio Bonizzoni, “Europa Galante” conducted by Fabio Biondi and “Il Giardino Armonico” conducted by Giovanni Antonini.

In 2011, he joined with violinist Liana Mosca and cellist Marcello Scandelli to find the Furibondo String Trio with whom he has recorded for Stradivarius and SoloMusica. He has also recorded on numerous occasions for Astrée Auvidis and Aliavox, Decca, Naïve, Opus 111, Glossa, Arts, Chandos, Stradivarius and RTSI multimedia. He teaches viola and Baroque viola at the Civica Scuola di Musica “Claudio Abbado” in Milan.
