Untitled, 1949-54

Saul Steinberg
ink (red, brown, black) and watercolor on paper
Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense
Gift of The Saul Steinberg Foundation

Fascinated by signatures, stamps and official diplomas, Steinberg draws these up in illegible handwriting, parodising documents with a purported legal value, both comically and delightfully. He mocks the claim to truth and certainty of these calligraphic documents.
