Interior of Pinacoteca di Brera, 1880 - 1890
Angelo Ripamonti - Oil on canvas - cm 90 x 104
The Accademia was separated from the gallery in 1882 to distinguish its function as a museum from its teaching duties, yet it continued to look much as it had done in 1809 throughout most of the 19th century. Paintings crowd together on several levels and standard frames replace the originals. Despite the artist’s rapid brush strokes, we can identify many of the works, some of them now on permanent loan. Note the sophisticated, elite audience the museum sought to attract.
