Adoration of the Magi, 1896

Gaetano Previati - Oil on canvas - cm 98 x 198

The painting came to the Pinacoteca in 1938 as a gift by the senator Ettore Conti. The first news about it is Previati’s letter to his brother on November 18 1892, in which he told him he had completed two “sketches” on November 4 for the Mostra della Famiglia Artistica. One of them was the Adoration of the Magi. The painter subverts the conventions of a long iconographic tradition with his dreamlike, symbolic art, stylistically marked by his typical divisionism.
